Dimension #011 Arabic Linguistics & Grammar
أُسْلُوبُ الِالْتِفَاتِ
Rhetorical Shift & Perspective Switching (Iltifat)
Linguistic Root: ل-ف-ت (To turn toward, shift direction, pivot)
Core Conceptual Overview
Iltifat is a sudden shift in pronouns, perspective, or tense within a passage to keep the listener alert.
هُوَ الَّذِي يُسَيِّرُكُمْ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا كُنتُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ وَجَرَيْنَ بِهِم بِرِيحٍ طَيِّبَةٍ
“It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them with a good wind...”
Deep Dive & Significance
In Surah Al-Fatihah, the prayer begins by talking about God in the third person ('Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds') and then suddenly switches to addressing Him directly ('You alone we worship'). This change draws the reader in, turning a statement about God into a direct, personal conversation with Him.
Linguistic & Thematic Gem
“Shifting from talking about someone to speaking directly to them instantly creates intimacy.”
Daily Practical Application
When you notice a pronoun switch in the Qur'an, pause and ask: who is speaking now, and how has the tone become more personal or urgent?
