Faith (Iman) vs. Reason ('Aql): Is Faith Blind?
The common reservation:
“Does Islam require blind faith without proof, asking followers to turn off their brains?”
In Islamic epistemology, reason ('Aql) and revelation (Naql) are twin lights:
1. **Condemnation of Blind Conformity**: The Quran repeatedly chastises those who blindly follow ancestral traditions: 'When it is said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers! Even though their fathers understood nothing nor were they guided?' (2:170).
2. **Over 1,200 Rational Inquiries**: The Quran appeals directly to human deductive logic, rhetorical questioning, and empirical observation. It constantly challenges: 'Will you not reason?' (Afala ta'qilun?), 'Will you not reflect?' (Afala tatakkarun?), 'Bring your proof if you should be truthful' (2:111).
3. **Reason Precedes Faith**: Islamic theologians establish that reason is the instrument used to verify the existence of the Creator and the authenticity of the Prophet; once verified, the intellect willingly accepts divine guidance.
