Creation, Evolution, and the Grand Design of the Universe

The common reservation:

“Does the Islamic narrative of creation clash with evolutionary biology and the age of the Earth?”

A nuanced reading of Islamic theology avoids simplistic fundamentalist traps: 1. **No Young-Earth Dogma**: Unlike Biblical literalism that claims the universe is 6,000 years old, Islamic scripture contains no genealogical age of the cosmos. The Quran describes creation in six 'Ayyam' (cosmic epochs/periods, where one day before God is like 1,000 or 50,000 years in 22:47 and 70:4). 2. **Biological Adaptation in Nature**: Islam has zero theological problem with speciation, natural adaptation, or transitional mechanisms within the plant and animal kingdoms. The Quran explicitly states that all life originated in water (21:30) and evolved across stages. 3. **The Special Spiritual Dignity of Humanity**: Islam affirms that human beings (Adam) were intentionally endowed with a transcendent soul (Ruh) and moral consciousness. Science investigates the physical biological mechanism; revelation provides the metaphysical meaning and moral purpose.
Surah Nuh (71:14)

“While He has created you in stages?”

Key rational insight: Science tells us how the clock ticks; revelation tells us who built the clock and why we were given time.
