Historical Preservation and Textual Integrity of the Quran
The common reservation:
“How can we be certain that the Quran recited today is identical to what was spoken in 7th-century Arabia?”
The preservation of the Quran is unique in human literary and religious history:
1. **The Fortress of Oral Transmission (Tawatur)**: The Quran was not left to the handwriting of an isolated monk in a monastery. From day one, it was memorized by thousands of companions and recited aloud daily in 5 mandatory prayers. This mass oral chain (Isnad) has continued unbroken through millions of Huffaz across every continent for 1,400 years.
2. **Forensic Manuscript Verification**: Early physical manuscripts—including the Birmingham Quran manuscript (carbon-dated to the lifetime of the Prophet or his companions) and the Sana'a and Topkapi codices—match the exact text recited today letter for letter.
3. **Internal Challenge**: The Quran issued a challenge to humanity: 'If you are in doubt... produce a surah like thereof' (2:23). If human alterations had occurred, critics would have easily produced competing versions. None exist.
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian.”
