Why Does a Self-Sufficient God Command Human Worship?

The common reservation:

“Does God have an insecure ego that needs our prayers, prostrations, and praise?”

A basic misunderstanding treats God like a human monarch who feeds on flattery: 1. **God is Completely Free of Need (Al-Ghani)**: In a famous Hadith Qudsi, God states: 'O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, humans and jinn, were to be as pious as the most pious heart among you, it would not increase My kingdom in anything.' God gains nothing from our worship and loses nothing from our disbelief. 2. **Worship as Spiritual Oxygen**: When a doctor prescribes 3 liters of water and daily exercise, the doctor does not need your hydration; your body needs it. Salah, Dhikr, and Fasting are the spiritual diet that shields the human psyche from narcissistic egoism, existential loneliness, and moral decay. 3. **Gratitude as Mental Health**: Acknowledging the source of your blessings (Shukr) cultivates deep contentment and protects against the toxic illusion of self-sufficiency (Istighna').
Surah Fatir (35:15)

“O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.”

Key rational insight: You do not do God a favor when you pray; you do your own soul the ultimate favor by plugging into its divine power source.
