Objective Morality vs. Secular Moral Relativism

The common reservation:

“Why do we need religion for morality? Can't humans just decide what is right and wrong based on empathy and social consensus?”

The grounding of moral realism requires a transcendent foundation: 1. **The Is-Ought Problem**: As philosopher David Hume noted, empirical science can describe what 'is' physically happening, but it can never deduce what 'ought' morally to happen. Evolution can explain why human beings have instincts to cooperate, but it cannot prove why murder is objectively evil rather than just socially inconvenient. 2. **The Tyranny of Consensus**: If morality is determined purely by majority vote or societal consensus, then slavery, racism, and genocide become 'moral' whenever a society votes for them. An objective divine moral law holds societies, kings, and billionaires accountable to universal justice regardless of cultural fads. 3. **Fitrah and Revelation**: Islam acknowledges that humans possess an innate moral intuition (Fitrah), but human ego and culture corrupt that intuition over time. Revelation serves as the calibrated standard restoring pristine moral clarity.
Surah An-Nisa (4:135)

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives...”

Key rational insight: Divine revelation is the anchor that prevents human morality from drifting with the fashionable currents of each era.
